9 Viennaâs position toward the Hungarian uprising: Austrian consequences
The author agrees with Thomas Schlesinger and Manfried Rauchensteiner that the events in Hungary in 1956 were the real test of Austrian neutrality on the first anniversary of the end of the occupation.97 From the very beginning of the uprising, the federal government took reasonable care not to overstep the bounds of neutrality in any way that could be interpreted as an intent to influence, instigate, or further stimulate the Hungarian revolution. Vienna was in a very difficult position and under enormous pressure. What kind of interests did the Austrian government have? Six points must be mentioned:
First, Vienna had to keep in mind Soviet comments that were skeptical, critical, and then aggressive concerning the reaction of the mass media and the attitudes of political parties. The government could not do anything that might have provoked further aggression and had to do everything to prevent the danger of a violation of its neutrality and a Russian intervention.
